"Into the Lake District.Today proved to be a great day, with sandy and gravel tracks for the entire duration of the day, and all in a much better state than what we have all endured the day before. The winter rains had caused havoc with the state of many of the tracks which proved to be worse than when we last saw them on the route-recce.
The camp site was again witness to some remarkable repair
work going on as the sun set over a vast lake. Our tents are pitched on the
shore of Lake Telmen, one of several large lakes in northern Mongolia –
tomorrow we will be camping on another lake. The hot water tonight was welcome
– the support organisation run pipes to tented cubicles and nothing is as
refreshing or as welcome as the piping hot water of a shower at the end of a
long day, followed by a visit to the beer tent while walking towards the
marquee where wooden tables and pews see our hot dinners served.
The wonder of Mongolia is that there is still a wilderness
on earth so vast that cars like ours can drive day after day after day through
such stunningly beautiful, breath-taking scenery. “Today has been a truly great
driving day,” was the summing up of Bentley driver Mark Wilkinson. As we all
finally crawled into our canvas igloos for the night, nobody could dispute
that."
