“The smell of bacon, sausages, and fresh coffee on the brew
filtered through the avenues of tiny tents, and from 6.0am, with the early
morning sun climbing over the hills to the east of our camp-site, the Peking
Paris contenders readied themselves for another long day on the road. The
agenda today was three Time Trials, in the middle of 340 kilometres, that would
take us to tonight’s camp-site, this one is to be alongside a river.
So, as for the driving, it’s to be just more of the same?
Not quite. There is universal agreement that this has been the hardest day so
far. There is also universal agreement that the stunningly beautiful scenery
just gets better with every day, as we drive through the expanse of wide open
valleys, a vivid green from the recent heavy rains.
The day has been a very long hard battle against badly
rutted tracks – there is no alternative, this is not a special rally route,
this route is the only way you can take if you want to drive North West – where
the winter rains having carved deep scars across the landscape that tests the
reactions of drivers and the strength of suspension systems. Everything and
everyone has been shaken up today.”
